Big Rocks First

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul? Mark 8:36

We buried my niece this week. She was only 23. She died tragically in a car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning, April 6th. A young doctor, she had graduated from medical school just 6 months ago. She seemed to have a full life ahead of her.

Times like these tend to make us pause and think about our lives. Times like these bring a sobering perspective.

What is life all about anyway?

The story is told of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish innovator who invented dynamite. When Alfred’s brother Ludvig died in 1888, a newspaper mistakenly published Alfred’s obituary instead, stating, “The merchant of death, Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.”

Nobel was shocked. That was not the way he wanted to be remembered. In 1895 he set aside the bulk of his estate and used his fortune to establish a yearly prize in honour of those who excelled in some area of achievement or service to humanity. History no longer remembers Alfred Nobel as the merchant of death, but as the noble patron of the coveted Nobel Prizes.

Dr John C. Maxwell says, “People will summarize your life in one sentence. Pick it now.”

How do you want to be remembered? What do you want people to say about you when you are gone? What legacy are you leaving behind?

What is really important?

As the saying goes, “No one ever said on his death bed, “I wish I had spent more time at the office.’”
In life there will always be countless priorities clamouring for our attention.

The late Steven Covey used the Big Rocks illustration to demonstrate the need for us to keep First things First in our lives. He tells the story of a professor who was teaching a group of students. You can read it in the excerpt below.

One day a teacher was speaking to a group of students. He pulled out an extremely large jar and set it on a table. Then he produced some large rocks and placed them, one at a time, into the jar.
When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, “Is this jar full?”
Everyone said, “Yes.”

“Really?” he asked. “Let’s see.” He pulled out some gravel and dumped it in. He shook the jar, causing the pieces to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. He asked the students again, “Is the jar full?”

His class was catching on quickly. “Probably not,” one of them answered.

“Very good!” he replied. He then brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in and it went into all the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. When he was finished he asked again, “Is this jar full?”

“No!” the class shouted.

“Excellent!” he replied. Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and poured it into the jar until it was filled to the brim.

The teacher then looked up at the students and asked, “What is the point of this illustration?”

One eager beaver raised his hand and said, “The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit some more things into it !”

“No,” the wise teacher replied, “that's not it. The main lesson is this: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them all in.”

"If you want to fit the big rocks into your life, you need to make sure to get them in first.  If you don't get the big rocks in first, you might not get them in at all!"

In the demands of life we often take the important things for granted. We assume that our family and friends will always be there. We take no notice of our health unless something goes wrong. We think there will be time later in life to make things right with God.

Take time today to determine the Big Rocks in your life.

The Big Rocks represent the important things in life – faith, family, health, using your gifts, developing your potential. The gravel and sand represent the less important things in life that tend to keep us busy and fill up our days– meetings, phone calls, emails, errands.

Decide what is important to you and determine to keep these as priorities in your life. Find some rocks, label them and keep them in a jar on your desk, your bedside table, the top of the fridge or wherever you will see them and be reminded to keep First Things First every day.

Plan your day to day life around the Big Rocks. You can always tell what is really important to you by your date book and your cheque book – how you spend your time and your money.

You only get one chance to live this life – make it count.

And remember, life is completely meaningless unless it is built on the Rock – Jesus Christ.

“That Rock was Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:4

Breath of Life

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul

(Genesis 2:7).

We have now come to the most fundamental truth about who you are.

In previous posts we discussed the truth that you are body, soul and spirit.

Your body is the physical part of you. The ‘you’ that we can see.

Your soul is your mind, will and emotions. The ‘you’ that thinks, feels, and makes choices.

So what is your spirit?

As I was thinking about the best way to explain what your spirit is, an analogy came to mind. It may seem simplistic, but I think it starts to make the point.

The inflatable air guy.

Inflatable air guys are balloon figures used for advertising. They are basically huge balloons, shaped like people, that dance around when air is blown into them continuously through a fan. Inflatable air guy waves his arms in the air, bends from side to side, and generally wiggles all over the place. Inflatable air guy looks alive and active while the wind is blowing, but once the air stops, inflatable air guy stops too. Once the fan is cut off, inflatable air guy falls to the ground, lifeless.

Your spirit is your innermost being. Your core. The essence of your life.

Your spirit is the breath of life that God breathed into you to give you life.

Your spirit is the part of you that is eternal.

The fan is the source of the air that keeps inflatable air guy going.

God is the Source of the breath of life that keeps you going.

Without the fan, air guy is shapeless, lifeless, powerless.

Without God…

Life in all its Fullness

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.

My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.

(John 10:10, New Living Translation)

In my previous post I told you about a woman whose face was world famous yet she didn't know it. Her image appeared on magazine covers all over the world yet she lived in poverty, eking out an existence at the foothills of a desolate mountain. Her image was world famous yet she remained completely unknown.

The fundamental key to living on purpose is to know the truth about who you are.

What you do not know can, and does, harm you.

It harms you in the sense that, like the woman, you may be alive, but you are merely eking out an existence, living far below the fullness of all that is available to you.

And I’m not just talking about having enough money.

Money helps, we all know that. But if life was simply about being financially secure, then we would not witness such a high degree of divorce, depression, suicide, and addiction in the lives of the rich and famous.

You can be a success at work yet be miserable at home because your marriage is falling apart.

You may finally move into the big house in the posh neighbourhood with the fancy car, yet lay awake in bed every night, your mind racing, your heart pounding, longing for a good night's sleep.

Riches lose their lustre when you have a child who has gone astray. And wealth is a vain comfort when your family is plagued by a chronic illness eating away at your health, your finances, your time, your peace.

Maybe for you, life is good – except when it seems like an endless treadmill of waking up, eating, going to work, eating, sitting in front of the TV, going to bed. And then you have to do it all over again the next day... and the next...

Or for you, life is good – so long as you don’t turn off the TV or radio or iPod or cell phone or Internet or whatever background noise keeps you going from the moment you wake up to the moment you drop into bed at night. Anything to keep away the silence. Anything to keep you from thinking. Anything to keep you from feeling that nagging emptiness that tells you there has to be more to life than this?

When you tap into the truth of who you are, you tap into the power of living on purpose.

Choose Life!

Apart from Christ, you can do nothing (John 15:5).
In Christ, you can do everything (Philippians 4:13).

Everything has an environment in which it flourishes – a fish in water, a plant in the soil, a star in the sky.

A fish in water is in its element. It is totally unlimited in fulfilling everything that it desires. It moves; it feeds; it breeds. It is free.

A plant in the ground flourishes and grows, producing flowers and fruit, beauty and benefit to all around.

The stars add magnificence to the night sky, and help us navigate and determine seasons and times.

But take a fish out of water, and it doesn’t do so well.

A plant plucked out of the ground may still look good for a while, but the fact that it is dead will soon become all too visible.

Even a shooting star is a dying star – a rock burning up as it leaves its own atmosphere and enters ours.

You too have an ideal environment; an atmosphere in which you flourish.

God.

You were created in the image of God, and God breathed His breath in to you to give you life (The Bible, Genesis 1:27 & Genesis 2:7).

You were made to live in Him.

Having a relationship with God is not really a matter of choice or even of belief.

It’s a matter of necessity.

You need to be in a relationship with God.

Just as a fish needs to be in water, and a plant needs to be in the ground, you need to be in a relationship with God.

In God, you are in your element. You are totally unlimited in fulfilling everything that you desire. You live and move and have your being. You are free. You grow, you flourish, you provide beauty and benefit to everyone around.

Apart from God, you may look good for a while, but the fact that you are dead will one day become all too visible.

LIFE LESSONS: Making that Change

‘…let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think…’
The Bible, New Living Translation, Romans 12:2

As 2011 comes to a close, many of us are full of hope about what the New Year holds. We’re busy making plans, excited about all we’re going to achieve in 2012. This is going to be the year that we make that change. For lots of people that change involves losing weight.

Luckily for those of you reading this blog, I’m an expert on losing weight.
I’ve lost weight several times in my life. The only problem is I usually put it all back on again!

Five years ago, I lost a staggering 35 kilos (about 77 pounds). I was the slimmest I’ve ever been in my whole life. Well, since I was 16 anyway. I looked great and I felt great. Unfortunately, I’d done a lot of wrong things to get there, and over the next 18 months or so, I watched helplessly as all those excess kilos slowly piled back on.

Still, you know what they say about learning from your mistakes. Since that fiasco, I’ve begun the process of losing weight again – only this time in the right way. I’ve lost 10 kilos so far, and maintained that weight loss for some months now. Now I’m ready to continue the count down towards my goal weight, and the countdown begins, you guessed it, in 2012!

As I continue to remind myself and put into practice the lessons that I learnt from my sorry episode, I’d like to share them with you too.

These are life lessons. They’re not just for those of us who face challenges with our weight.  You can apply them to any issue that you’re dealing with.

LESSON 1: You are what you think

To change your life, you have to change your thoughts.

If you want to change who you are, or what you do, you have to change the way you think.

It’s that basic.

Watch what you allow into your head. Change what you ‘feed’ your mind.
Be particular about who or what you listen to.
Remember GIGO: garbage in = garbage out.

Let me give you a practical example.

Many times, I leave my house full of optimism, feeling good about myself and the 0.37 kilos that my digital scale shows that I’ve lost that morning – only to bump into a ‘friend’ who  says something like, “Gosh you’ve put on a lot of weight haven’t you? Are you eating too many cakes? Have you stopped exercising?” (Since when did commenting on someone’s body size become an acceptable form of greeting anyway?!).
In the past, a remark like that would really bruise my self-esteem. I’d start feeling bad about myself and end up finding solace in those aptly named comfort foods!

Not anymore!

 I made a decision.

I can’t control what other people choose to say; but I can control how I choose to respond.

I choose to think positively about myself.

I may not be where I want to be, but I thank God I’m not where I used to be! I’m making progress and that’s what matters. The change may not be visible yet, but change has started where it matters most – in my mind.

What wrong ways of thinking could hinder you from reaching your goals in 2012? What limiting thought patterns have sabotaged your progress in the past?

Replace every negative thought with life-giving thoughts today.
